Bone Mineral Density
BMD: Bone Mineral Density Scanning, often referred to as BMD or, uses dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) images to measure the density of bone. BMD scans provide referrers and patients information on bone strength, fragility, assess your fracture risk and diagnose osteoporosis.

Our team will provide specific instructions at the time of Please be prepared with any relevant information that may be required to book your appointment including knowledge of prior BMD examinations and your medication history. You may be asked to wear a gown for the examination, and it is advised that a comfortable two piece outfit is worn. It is important to arrive 15 mins prior to fill in any necessary paperwork to avoid delays in your appointment.

Your BMD will be performed by a qualified Radiographer who will escort you to the examination room, explain the procedure, and instruct you on how to prepare. You will be asked to lie still on the BMD The scanner will pass over your spine, hip and/or forearm. Once the BMD is complete, the information will be reviewed and interpreted by a Radiologist, a doctor specialising in Radiology, who will prepare a report for your referrer.
Radiology Queensland Group bulk bills most Medicare eligible services, however some examinations incur a fee. Our booking staff will advise you if a fee applies.
Please allow 24 to 48 hours for your report. If you have been instructed to return to your healthcare professional immediately following the scan, it is important to advise one of our staff members. If your exam is clinically urgent, this will be prioritised, and our team will communicate with our Radiologist to ensure a prompt report is provided.
